He is Director of the Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering at the University of Glasgow and honorary Professor at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow. Areas of research include dynamic modelling of stimulated muscle, lower-limb paraplegic cycling, feedback control of balance during standing in paraplegia and stroke, FES-assisted arm-cranking in tetraplegia, cardiopulmonary responses to active treadmill therapy using partial body-weight support and robotic assistance, and abdominal stimulation for cough and respiratory function.
